13 Dec 2011 November in WoW

posted in Guild News Written by Grukkaa December 13, 2011, 07:51:38 pm 46 Views Print

The big news this month was the new patch, which just made it into this month's update, arriving as it did on the last day of November.

Much to talk about, the new content being probably the most obvious. A lot of members raced through the new 5-person heroic instances pretty quickly, gathering Valor Points galore to their weekly limit! This allowed them to sate their greed at the vendors, picking up new items  at a level of 397 to further boost their abilities. The 'old' VPs were combined with Justice Points and the old top tier of level 378 items moved over to the JP vendor, again allowing upgrades for the more casual player.

The new instances seem fun, and not too tricky, so they will probably be milked dry very quickly by those needing anything from them. The new raid instance seems more tricky (more on this next month), although the new 'LFR' tool will allow folk to get in there as easily as 'LFG' gets you into heroic instances, so it may be that these bosses will get old quicker than previously. Baradin Hold also got another new boss, so maybe the LFR tool will make that trip a bit less painful than it's been in the past!

Rogues got a legendary weapon to chase after, but they will probably be as elusive as the staff is for spell-users! Still, the extension of this type of quest can only bode well for other classes.

Transmogrification and Void Storage arrived as well. The former allowing you to change the appearance of a piece of armour or a weapon into another one you like the looks of better. Having tried this, there are a lot more restrictions on it than previously thought, so it's not quite carte-blanche to do as you like.

I personally found the restrictions on Void Storage made it almost useless: any modified armour/weapons you put in lose all mods (enchants/gems/reforging); you can't put unique items in it (so I'm still stuck with over 20 tabards in my normal bank); there are probably others, but I gave up with it after that!

The Darkmoon Faire got its own permanent home, with a bunch of quests and rewards to go with it. Quite a nice idea, with a fun variety of daily quests and some new profession quests with a good level of reward (+5 to skill, if you're not maxed out yet).

Too many class changes to go into here, but yet another nerf to Druid healing makes me sigh. Still – they have upped the number of fragments you get from each Archaeology dig (to a maximum of 9), so I might start grinding that again.

Not much to say about our raiding except – Ragnaros still lives!!  Angry  Despite several good efforts through the month, our ancient nemesis still holds on to his evil soul. Still, it took us a while to get him down back in the bad old days, so I'm sure we'll get him eventually!

Two fun events through the month: a very short two-day 'Day of The Dead', where a quick visit and dance with Catrina (in any of numerous locations) allowed you to be a skeleton for the day! Pilgrim's Bounty kicked off later in the month, and lasted from the 20th to the 26th. Mucho drinking, stuffing of faces, shooting of rogues (if you could find 'em!) and turkeys, and throwing of food ensued as (slightly chubbier, by the end of the event, at least) ORCs raced around the land chasing the various achievements available.

WoW also entered it's 7th Anniversary week on the 20th (has it really been over 7 years I've been playing this game??), but the reward this year was a bit naff: just a repeatable buff for experience and reputation that vanished at the end of the week. Should have been a pet or a mount!

No personal achievements passed on to me this month, so the focus is on the guild, once again. ORC wasted no time in getting into the new instances, giving us the heroic achievements for all three of the new 5-person heroics (End Time, Well of Eternity, Hour of Twilight) on the night the patch was installed – thanks to those that pulled them in for us. That was it, I'm afraid, but in reality, there are very few left to get, and most of those are in the PvP category.

That's about it, so I'll finish with the usual arrivals, departures, promotions and retirements for November

13 Dec 2011 Here we go....

posted in Guild News Written by Grukkaa December 13, 2011, 07:49:48 pm 41 Views Print

Well, the time finally arrived for a goodly portion of the interested ORCs to try out Star Wars: The Old Republic during the stress test held over the final weekend in November. Yes, I know a few of you have been lucky enough to be in there for a while before this, but we actually got a couple of days as a guild (mini-guild, at least) to try out a game some of us have been waiting for since Episode IV was released.  Pray

(Cue violins, dry ice) You realise we are now 34 years on from that film's release, and it's maybe hard to describe the impact it had way back then. As a sci-fi fan, the film grabbed you from the moment the opening trawl faded away, the Star Destroyer flew over your head and your guts bounced to the bass note of the engines.

The game, while not quite in that blockbuster league, by common consent is looking very good. There is a feeling for the first 10 levels or so of being in your own Star Wars mini-movie: the voice acting, the logical progression of each storyline and the use of background music to enhance the experience really does pull you into the game. The graphics have been commented on, but they are undoubtedly Star Wars, although more Clone Wars style than Episode I-VI. That said, it will allow the game to support lower-spec machines, which in turn will allow more to play (and maximise Bioware's revenue stream!)

While some moved on swiftly up to the late teens or early twenties, level-wise and found new experiences there, the lower levels I personally found very entertaining. The companion system seems a fine innovation, especially the 'go fetch' missions for crafting materials. The story instances, bonus missions that open up as you complete assigned ones and the proactive combat system all provide subtle differences to that king of MMOs: WoW, and we'll have to wait and see if these are enough to allow SW:TOR to eventually match that game's longevity.

Overall, the 'stress' weekend was anything but. I was pretty much able to log on whenever I liked, although there was a maintenance break at one point. I didn't have to queue and didn't suffer a single dc. I did end up stuck once – completely normal terrain and I could run on the spot – but I wasn't moving, and I couldn't jump. A complete relog fixed that, however. Overall, technically, a very enjoyable experience.  Clapping!

As far as ORC goes, the runup to release has been a bit... err... 'bumpy'!  Wink Huge thanks, however, go to Blood and the others involved in getting the guild up and running  in pre-registration and generally doing all the admin to ensure we are ready for the game's start.  Good Job! The debate over PVE vs RP-PVE bubbled for a while on the forums, but (as usual with ORC) a bit of discussion provided a way through and there is a definite feeling of anticipation building now that ORC (as a guild at least) is venturing into unexplored territory.

A big welcome to old friends from other games who are giving this one a shot with us, especially our long-term allies from Clan Wulf. Nice to have you with us, and nice to see some names from long ago active again!  Welcome!

Even nicer to have some brand new applicants chomping at the bit to join us – you'll get a proper name-check next month, but welcome to ORC and I hope your stay here is a long and happy one. (I was going to say 'Live long and prosper', but I have nagging feeling that's from another multiverse...)  Im Innocent!

So – we await our early access dates with feverish anticipation, and the opening of the game with barely-concealed glee. Whatever the game is like, it's always better to be amongst friends, and I'm sure ORC will be held in the same high opinion it's obtained within other games once we establish ourselves.

Until the game's opening – May the Force be with you (in whichever shade you enjoy the most!)   Saber Dance

12 Nov 2011 Firelands update

posted in Guild News Written by Grukkaa November 12, 2011, 11:24:41 am 117 Views Print
It's been quiet here for a while, as I was waiting for someone to add 'first kill' piccies to the previous post. However, it's maybe more important to keep this page current!

Two days after our previous victories, ORC returned to the Firelands and managed another double-first-kill evening!! This time the victims were Alysrazor and Baleroc. Another great night's work by our raid force.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z70/Sunilpramanik/MajordomoStaghelmKill.png

The march of our raiders towards Ragnaros was completed on Friday 30th September, when Majordomo Staghelm bit the dust! Another classic ORC victory, and now only the giant flaming one himself (once again) stands in our way.

If anyone has the missing first kill pictures for these last 5 bosses, please let an admin know so they can be added.

24 Sep 2011 Double victory night!

Friday 23 September proved a fine night for the ORC raid force. The raiding week had started well with Lord Rhyolith going down rather quickly on Wednesday. A few good tries on Beth'tilac followed, but although we successfully entered the last phase of the fight, we couldn't quite finish her off.

She was not so lucky when we returned on Friday! After a couple of warm up tries, one very close, she was hacked down from her web and disposed of. Yes, there were only two raiders standing at the end of the fight - but that's one more than we need for a win!

We moved around the Firelands, killing various packs until Shannox announced his arrival. Our first pull was a bit of an accident, but actually went passably well (considering), at least giving everyone a view of the fight. Soon afterwards, with traps being dodged and dogs being dealt with, Shannox too gave up his shiny loot to us. A few tries on Alysrazor ensued after that, to give us some practise for Sunday.

While the bosses have been nerfed, the fights are still tough and our raiders should be proud of this week's progression. Well done all - more to come, I hope!!  Thumbs Up
